beer duck.jpg (21774 bytes) "VAP-61's F.R. Duck"

F.R. Duck joined VAP-61 in Cubi and travel with them to DaNang in 1967. He reportedly flew many night photo missions quietly settled in the camera compartment aboard RA-3Bs of VAP-61. Beer consumption and smoking butts were his favorite past time. Rumor has it that when VQ-1 took over VAP-61, F. R. Duck's reputaion and career where not taken into account when the 'Barbie' was fired up.

"Rocket Attack"

EA-3B (BuNo 144848) of VQ-1 (on loan from VQ-2) took a hit during the night (top) from a 140mm rocket while parked in the revetments at DaNang. Daylight (lower) showed the extent of the damage. Date unknown.

Arrangements were made for transport via a jeep carrier ship from DaNang to Atsugi for repairs. After preparing the plane, and the road down to the docks, the plane was towed through town. The Marines were called on for protection and clearing traffic which consisted of copious bikes and congestion. The struts had to be pumped up to clear low objects and deflated to pass under overhead obstructions. Then heavy weather at sea broke loose the tie downs during a storm and she was lost overboard into Tokyo bay before reaching her destination. Lost forever to this day!
