My military service
U.S. Navy, Oct. 66 - July 70
On Jan. 20, 1998, with the support of many, I started the A-3 Skywarrior Association. To see what it is all about, go to the A-3 Skywarrior web site. There is a huge amount of information there that is the result of my experiences with the aircraft as well as donated pictures and information supplied by other ex-whalers.
I was an aircrewman and flight deck trouble shooter in a squadron attached to the aircraft carrier USS Ranger (CV-61). The squadron changed its name and designation several times. We started out as VAW-13 flying A-1 Skyraiders then changed over to EKA-3Bs. We became VAQ-130 in Oct. 1968 and VAQ-134 in June 1969 before I left in 1970. Our mission was to fly shotgun, for fighters and bombers over Nam, with electronic countermeasure equipment, i.e., SAM missile site jamming. Our other function was inflight refueling of all aircraft launched on missions and returning aircraft that needed a little gas to get home. The USS Ranger was decommissioned in July of 1993 and is in reserve at Bremerton, Washington. The VAQ squadrons (tactical electronic warfare squadron) now fly EA-6B prowlers. The west coast squadrons are located at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, Washington.
